One day away from the 2017 Cardiff Half-Marathon and this is the summary of how much I have been able to send to Bethany Village Home in Kenya this past year: KES 73,229.15 approximately (€564). This year I was able to use a new transfer system that I highly recommend: www.transferwise.com their charges are very low and exchange rates very competitive, which is the opposite of high street banks. From all the girls in the house, a very big thank you to all those who supported and I hope we can improve next year

A un dia de la Media Maraton de Cardiff 2017 y este es el resumen de los fondos que he podido enviar a Bethany Village Home: KES 73.229,15 aproximadamente (€564). Este año he podido utilizar un sistema nuevo de transferencia que recomiendo con confianza: www.transferwise.com, sus comisiones son muy bajas y el tipo de cambio muy competitivo, lo que es opuesto al caso de los bancos tradicionales. De parte de todas las niñas en la casa, muchisimas gracias a todos aquellos/as que han colaborado y espero que podamos mejorar el año que viene

La historia de Joseph, Shiro y David / The story of Joseph, Shiro and David

La historia de Joseph, Shiro y David me hablan también de la regla social de reciprocidad que comentaba anteriormente. 

Joseph Chege, el fundador de Bethany Village Home, creció en una barriada (slum) de Nairobi. No habría tenido acceso a la educación si no fuera por misioneros norteamericanos que apoyaron su formación incluso cuando ya habían regresado a EEUU.

David es el suegro de Joseph. Huérfano desde muy corta edad, conoció la generosidad y la solidaridad entre los miembros de su comunidad que le dieron un techo y ayudaron a ir a la escuela

Ambos, con Shiro, esposa de Joseph e hija de David, forman el equipo que sostiene Bethany Village Home económica y humanamente. Dedican su vida a posibilitar el cambio de vida, mediante el acceso a la educación, de este grupo de niñas.

En estos días de Navidad, en los que parece que estamos más sensibles a la solidaridad, comparto esta visión  de la  reciprocidad  que yo he tenido el privilegio de conocer en estas tres personas.

The story of Joseph, Shiro and David also tells me of the social rule for reciprocation to which I refer in a previous post.

Joseph Chege, founder of Bethany Village Home, grew up in one of the slums around Nairobi. He would not have had access to education were it not for the generosity and solidarity of North American missionaries.

David is Joseph’s father in law. An orphan from an early age, and his family originating from a village in the countryside he was the recipient of the generosity and solidarity of members of his community that gave him shelter and helped him go to school.

Both, together with Shiro, Joseph’s wife and David’s daughter, make up the team that sustain Bethany Village Home, financially and humanly. They dedicate their lives to facilitate life changes, through access to education, to this group of young girls.

During this Christmas period, in which we seem to be more sensitive to solidarity, I share this vision of reciprocation which I have had the privilege of knowing through these three wonderful people.

Rule of reciprocity / La regla de la reciprocidad

A very good illustration of how this rule reaches into human's future is the story of $5000 of relief aid that was sent in 1985 between Mexico and the impoverished people of Ethiopia. Native officials of the Ethiopian Red Cross had decided to send money to help the victims of that year's earthquake in Mexico City. Despite the enormous needs prevailing in Ethiopia, the money was being sent because Mexico had sent aid to Ethiopia  in 1935, when it was invaded by Italy.

Una muy buena ilustracion de como esta regla alcanza a impactar en el futuro de los humanos es la historia de $5000 de ayuda humanitaria enviados en 1985 entre Mejico y la empobrecida Etiopia. Miembros nativos de la Cruz Roja etiope decidieron enviar el dinero para ayudar a las victimas del terremoto de aquel año en Ciudad de Mejico . A pesar de las enormes necesidades en Etiopia, el dinero fue enviado porque Mejico habia enviado ayuda a Etiopia en 1935, cuando fue invadida por Italia.

Hello everyone! I would like to talk again about Bethany Village Africa Home (Nairobi). I have visited them several times and I was moved by the work this family are doing and how they struggle to care for these 20 girls.
Since 2015 I cooperate with them and I facilitate other people to do it sending funds to purchase clothing, food, medicines, school fees…
Last transfer was $700 and the challenge is to reach the target of $1000, will you help me reach it?

Hola a todos! Me gustaría hablar de nuevo de Bethany Village Africa Home (Nairobi). Estuve allí en varias ocasiones y me impresionó el trabajo que esta familia hace y lo que se lucha por sacar a estas 20 niñas adelante.
Desde el año 2015 colaboro con ellos y posibilito que otras personas lo hagan, enviando fondos para la compra de ropa, comida, medicinas, enseñanza...
El último envío fue de unos $700 y el reto para este es llegar a $1000. ¿Me ayudas a conseguirlo?

Back to School / Vuelta al colegio

I heard today that the girls are going back to school this week after a three weeks break. David has just returned from his village with 3 sacs of maize and two of beans, which will go a long way to help feed the girls. David is Joseph's father-in-law and he is a pillar in supporting the Home and making sure things run smoothly, a very wise person with a bog heart. He understands very well what the girls go through as he also grew up with the help of charitable people when he lost his parents at a very early age. Two of the girls come from David's village, the rest have arrived from slums around Nairobi.

Joseph also tells me that the girls are growing very fast and will need new uniforms before the new year; last year we helped them a bit with the uniforms and I hope this year too, they were very grateful.

Hoy me he enterado de que las niñas van a la escuela esta semana después de un descanso de tres semanas. David acaba de regresar de su pueblo con 3 sacos de maíz y dos de judias/frijoles, lo cual ayudará enormemente a alimentar a las niñas. David es el suegro de Joseph, y él es uno de los pilares en el apoyo a la casa asegurandose siempre de que las cosas funcionen bien, una persona muy sabia con un gran corazón. Entiende muy bien lo que las niñas pasan ya que él también creció con la ayuda de gente benevola cuando perdió a sus padres a una edad muy temprana. Dos de las niñas provienen del pueblo de David, el resto han llegado de los barrios pobres alrededor de Nairobi.

Joseph tambien me cuenta que las niñas estan creciendo muy rapido y que necesitaran nuevos uniformes antes del año que viene; el año pasado las ayudamos con esto y espero que este año también, mostraron muchisima gratitud.

Less than two months / Menos de dos meses

Less than two months for this year's half marathon in Cardiff. Time has gone even faster this year. I hope we can raise some more funds, for that I will try to keep explaining how much difference our little contribution makes to support the home and how incredibly grateful they are at the home.


Menos de dos meses para la media marathon de este año en Cardiff. El tiempo ha pasado incluso mas deprisa este ultimo año. Intentare continuar explicando la gran diferencia que nuestra modesta contribucion hace y la enorme gratitud de todo el mundo en la casa.

Ras i'r Bannau 5km 2016

Ras i'r Bannau 5km Race completed today and thoroughly enjoyed. Personal best and improvement of about two and a half minutes over last year's time. I will update once offical times are published. This race raises funds for the local welsh school in Brecon Ysgol-y-Bannau. this is my first running race of the year completed in preparation for the 21km half-marathon in October.

Completada hoy la carrera Ras i'r Bannau de 5km y disfrutada enormemente. Record personal de 5km en carretera y unos dos minutos y medio de mejora sobre el tiempo del año pasado. Actualizare cuando publiquen los tiempos oficiales. Esta carrera recauda fondos para la escuela local de Brecon en lengua galesa llamada Ysgol-y-Bannau. Esta es mi primera carrera este año en preparacion para la media maraton en octubre.

Waat4 2016 30km

Waat4 30km Challenge completed yesterday in 7hours and 7 minutes. We were four in our team: Ken, John, Andi and me, thank you to all for a great day. This is an even to raise money for local charities that some times we do not think about, something quite different to Bethany Home and more local.

El desafio de Waat4 de 30km fue completado ayer en 7 hours y 7 minutos. Eramos cuatro en mi equipo: Ken, John, Andi y yo, gracias a todos por un dia fantastico. Este es un evento pra recaudar fondos destinados a organizaciones beneficas locales en las que a veces no pensamos, algo bastante differente a "Bethany Home" y mas cercano.

Over the coming weeks, I will start telling you a bit more about how the girls live in the house and about the people who make this fantastic project possible by giving up their time, money and effort. First, I thought I would show you the kitchen and the pantry. Besides the private funding provided by Joseph and his wife Shiro, the Home only gets some support - privately and sporadically from the congregation - from the local Gospel Church. Oh! I should also mention David, Shiro's father, wonderful person with a lot of knowledge and experience as well as a very big heart; he is a key member of this big family.

Durante las próximas semanas, voy a comenzar a contaros más acerca de cómo viven las niñas en la casa y sobre las personas que hacen posible este fantástico proyecto contribuyendo con su tiempo, dinero y esfuerzo. En primer lugar, pensé en mostraros la cocina y la despensa. Además de la financiación privada proporcionada por Joseph y su esposa Shiro, el hogar sólo recibe algún apoyo - de manera privada y esporadica por parte de feligreses - de la Iglesia Evangelica local. Ah! También debería mencionar a David, el padre de Shiro, maravillosa persona con gran sabiduria y experiencia, así como un corazón enorme; él es un miembro clave de esta gran familia

The Girls in the Home / Las Niñas en la Casa

These are the girls in the Home, if I counted right they are up to 20. The code on the left identifies the girls and the Government Inspectors can keep track of them when they visit the Home. I must admit I struggled a bit with remembering the names but I was getting there by the time I left!!

I will keep telling you about them, how they live and also about the amazing people who look after them. As you can imagine I was given a very warm welcome, they sang for me and said prayers. It was beyond moving, hard to explain how big and wonderful hearts they have.

Estas son las niñas en la casa, si conté bien son 20. El código a la izquierda identifica a las niñas y el inspector del gobierno puede hacer seguimiento cuando visita la casa. Debo admitir que tenia problemas con los nombres pero para cuando termino el día casi me los sabia (al menos la mitad!!!)

Os seguiré contando sobre ellas, como viven y también acerca de la increíble gente que las cuida. Como os podéis imaginar me dieron una muy calurosa bienvenida, cantaron y rezaron por mi. Fue mas que emocionante, difícil de explicar lo maravillosos y grandes que tienen los corazones
