La historia de Joseph, Shiro y David / The story of Joseph, Shiro and David

The story of Joseph, Shiro and David also tells me of the social rule for reciprocation to which I refer in a previous post.

Joseph Chege, founder of Bethany Village Home, grew up in one of the slums around Nairobi. He would not have had access to education were it not for the generosity and solidarity of North American missionaries.

David is Joseph’s father in law. An orphan from an early age, and his family originating from a village in the countryside he was the recipient of the generosity and solidarity of members of his community that gave him shelter and helped him go to school.

Both, together with Shiro, Joseph’s wife and David’s daughter, make up the team that sustain Bethany Village Home, financially and humanly. They dedicate their lives to facilitate life changes, through access to education, to this group of young girls.

During this Christmas period, in which we seem to be more sensitive to solidarity, I share this vision of reciprocation which I have had the privilege of knowing through these three wonderful people.

If you want to cooperate with Bethany Village Home you can do it at https://gogetfunding.com/bethanyvillagehome2016/ or alternatively you can contact me by private message.

Rule of reciprocity / La regla de la reciprocidad

A very good illustration of how this rule reaches into human's future is the story of $5000 of relief aid that was sent in 1985 between Mexico and the impoverished people of Ethiopia. Native officials of the Ethiopian Red Cross had decided to send money to help the victims of that year's earthquake in Mexico City. Despite the enormous needs prevailing in Ethiopia, the money was being sent because Mexico had sent aid to Ethiopia  in 1935, when it was invaded by Italy.

For those who would like to help this year, just wanted to remind you that there is a link on the Facebook page to the "gogetfunding" site (https://gogetfunding.com/bethany-village-home-kenya/) where you can make donations big or small and I believe the blue "Book Now" button at the top also works. I have already collected some donations offline that I will add to the page and I am also hoping for a couple of businesses to donate. Thank you all

Back to School / Vuelta al colegio

I heard today that the girls are going back to school this week after a three weeks break. David has just returned from his village with 3 sacs of maize and two of beans, which will go a long way to help feed the girls. David is Joseph's father-in-law and he is a pillar in supporting the Home and making sure things run smoothly, a very wise person with a bog heart. He understands very well what the girls go through as he also grew up with the help of charitable people when he lost his parents at a very early age. Two of the girls come from David's village, the rest have arrived from slums around Nairobi.
Joseph also tells me that the girls are growing very fast and will need new uniforms before the new year; last year we helped them a bit with the uniforms and I hope this year too, they were very grateful.

Less than two months / Menos de dos meses

Less than two months for this year's half marathon in Cardiff. Time has gone even faster this year. I hope we can raise some more funds, for that I will try to keep explaining how much difference our little contribution makes to support the home and how incredibly grateful they are at the home.

Waat4 2016 30km

Waat4 30km Challenge completed yesterday in 7hours and 7 minutes. We were four in our team: Ken, John, Andi and me, thank you to all for a great day. This is an even to raise money for local charities that some times we do not think about, something quite different to Bethany Home and more local.

More about Bethany Home / Más información sobre Bethany Home

Over the coming weeks, I will start telling you a bit more about how the girls live in the house and about the people who make this fantastic project possible by giving up their time, money and effort. First, I thought I would show you the kitchen and the pantry. Besides the private funding provided by Joseph and his wife Shiro, the Home only gets some support - privately and sporadically from the congregation - from the local Gospel Church. Oh! I should also mention David, Shiro's father, wonderful person with a lot of knowledge and experience as well as a very big heart; he is a key member of this big family.

The Girls in the Home / Las Niñas en la Casa

These are the girls in the Home, if I counted right they are up to 20. The code on the left identifies the girls and the Government Inspectors can keep track of them when they visit the Home. I must admit I struggled a bit with remembering the names but I was getting there by the time I left!!
I will keep telling you about them, how they live and also about the amazing people who look after them. As you can imagine I was given a very warm welcome, they sang for me and said prayers. It was beyond moving, hard to explain how big and wonderful hearts they have.

Another long gap between posts but I am determined to be more regular from now on. The last news I had from the girls a few weeks back were that they had a break from school until the first week in May. All seemed ok except Faridah who was taking medication for a chest infection, I hope she is fully recovered now!!

Catholics and Protestants: The righteous and giving

In a world so concerned about political correctness these topics may be a little bit sensitive but I just wanted to share something that my eldest son, who is 14, told me a few days ago. Something that made me think of my culture, the way I grew up, my environment and also about donations for my initiative in Kenya.

My son, Artai, came home from school a few days ago saying he had learned something very interesting about the differences between Catholics and Protestants, related in particular to the virtue of giving. He said, the most important for Catholics and the main priority is to provide for your family; once your family has enough - something always subjective - you should look out and help those in need.

This, I believe, is reflected in the Bible in some of Paul's letters. The apostle Paul wrote: "Certainly if anyone does not provide for those who are his own, and especially for those who are members of his household, he has disowned the faith and is worse than a person without faith"
(1 Timothy 5: 8).

Protestants, on the other hand, perceive slightly differently the values of giving and kindness. This is illustrated by the parable of the sheep and the goats (Matthew 25, 31:46), those who do not act in their life with generosity and do not help someone in need, in the same way they could have passed Jesus when he was in need and not helped him. If you can not give, you will not be welcome into heaven.

Another slight difference he explained is the following; in Catholicism, you will be virtuous if you can fend for yourself and not just live on handouts or the charity of others. By contrast, in the Protestant doctrine the righteous will be those who give and who are able to do so with discretion and without bragging or boasting of their generosity; do not give to impress people. This, I think is described in Matthew 6: 1-18. Jesus says, "Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.”".

My fascination here is not the differences between religions per se but how those differences or approaches may have defined cultures, societies and the values we grow with.

If, like me, you are curious about these issues and you want to comment please do not hesitate to do so

Shopping to go back to school / De compras para el cole

I received some nice photos showing some of the girls when they were taken to buy some shoes and clothes for school. Mariam is one of the new girls that arrived to the Home. The other two I remember them well from my visit last year, Marion and little Rehana who always has a smile on her face. The girls have now settled down for the first semester. As always, they remain focused to perform well in School

Thank you from Bethany Home

I am very delayed in updating and apologise for it. Rather than try to write explaining what Joseph said after they could use the money received, I am attaching images containing the lovely "Thank you" Email he sent as well as receipts showing how the funds were spent. As you know, this was always my intention that all of you - who very kindly contribute - could see how the money helps the girls.

Funds received in Kenya!!

I had confirmation from Joseph last Tuesday that the money arrived to Kenya, 68,982 Kenyan Shillings. He was extremely grateful and will start purchasing stuff required for the girls - who are now back in school after the Christmas Break - and receipts will be produced to be shared on this page. Thank you all again for your support

Funds raised in 2015

After some technical issues, I have managed to send the funds collected this past year 2015 to Bethany Village Home.
The amount finally sent was £473 (Nearly $700). You can see on the "Gogetfunding" page the total amount raised was £505. The charges from Gogetfunding are 4% and Paypal charge 5% for receiving the money so total charges from both were £31.8
I tried a while back to look for a fund raising platform that is free but could not find any. This is pretty bizarre and also annoying, I would welcome any advise if any of you know of a truly free fundraising page.
Once the money is received, it will be spent on some of the girls more pressing needs and all will be justified and detailed on this blog and the Facebook page.

Happy 2016 - Feliz año 2016 - Bonne année 2016

Happy New Year!! Best wishes for 2016 and thank you for following this project and all the support
